Jewellery Wear, Care & Cleaning Guide

Wear Guide:

Every piece here at Raelyn Rose Jewellery is carefully made with high quality standards to ensure you can love and wear your pieces regularly. However, there are times when your jewellery should be removed to prevent damage to precious metals and gemstones.

An important time when all jewellery should be removed is when taking a shower. This is because exposure to hot water and soaps (such as shampoo, conditioner, body lotions, etc.) can damage both the gold and gemstones in your precious pieces.

Heading to a beach or pool? We also recommend removing all rings, necklaces, bracelets and earrings prior, because sand from the beach and chlorine from pools can cause damage to many gemstones, especially porous stones (mentioned later in this blog post) and sadly the damage is often permanent.

Chains can get stretched or kinked if worn while sleeping. So its best to allow your jewellery to rest while you do too!

One main cause of damage is when pieces are worn during exercise, sport and similar such activities. When exercising, often sweat can cause grime and dirt build up on metal and underneath stones. There is also a risk of chains snapping.

Particularly with activities involving lifting (such as weights at the gym), we strongly recommend removing all rings because ring bands are very prone to being scratched and bent when worn during activities of this kind. Sadly this is a very common cause of damage, but can be easily avoided!

The best time to wear jewellery is when going out to social gatherings, for work, running errands, visiting family, and many other regular daily activities and outings. It’s the perfect way to add a final touch and that extra bit of personality to your outfit. They say you never really know a person until you’ve seen their jewellery…

Care & Cleaning Guide:

Gold is a precious metal with a beautiful soft shine. To maintain this shine, cleaning may be required from time to time. Cleaning your jewellery helps maintain the sparkle of stones and preserves the overall beauty of your piece.

Gold is a soft metal so gentle handling is important to avoid bending, scratching or damaging the metal.  Additionally, certain cleaning methods are not recommended for pieces with porous or “soft” stones such as opals, onyx, pearls, turquoise, emeralds, etc. For items with porous/soft gemstones, we do not recommend using materials such as toothpaste, vinegar, baking soda or alcohol based cleaning products, as they may damage the gemstones. We also advise against using an ultrasonic cleaner with these stones.

To clean your jewellery:

  1. Create a lukewarm soapy water mixture – a small bowl works perfectly! (Make sure the soap you use does not contain ammonia, baking soda, or chlorine/bleach if cleaning a piece with porous or soft gemstones)
  2. Gently place your piece in this mixture, and allow to soak for 1-2mins (soaking is not recommended for pieces containing porous or soft gemstones)
  3. Use a soft toothbrush to gently clean the metal. Make sure to clean around and under any gemstones if applicable – this will help restore the sparkle in the stones.
  4. Gently dry with a soft cotton cloth or paper towel.
  5. Allow to air dry for 5 minutes.
  6. Your piece is ready to be worn and loved again!

After air drying (step 5), it is optional to use a jewellery cleaning cloth to polish your metal. However please keep in mind that jewellery cleaning cloths are for cleaning metal only, and should not be used to polish gemstones or diamonds. For this reason, we advise that you only use it to clean the metal part of your jewellery (it’s a very effective cleaning method for chains!). Polishing gemstones with a polishing cloth may result in stains or scratch marks and can cause permanent damage.

For stones with a pavé setting or multiple small stones, we do not recommend using an ultrasonic cleaner as it may risk loosening some of the stones. However ultrasonic cleaners are an effective cleaning method for plain bands or designs with bezel settings, and are very effective for removing grime and dirt from in between necklace/bracelet chain links.
